Section A – Reading

1. Read the following passage carefully:
THE ROAD TO SUCCESS
(1) The Road to success is not straight: there is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, caution-lights called family, and you will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spark called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, and a driver called God, you will eventually make it to a place called success!
(2) In spite of all our planning and preparation, unexpected challenges are certain to arise. The bumps in the road will be unavoidable, but you’ll never get to your destination if you aren’t willing to drive over them. The difference between a disaster and triumph lies in whether or not you’re prepared and willing to weather the storm. If you’re ready, those bumps will become the stepping-stones.
(3) The key thing to realise is that working harder is the same as working smarter How do you work smarter? You just need to have the right skills People want improved circumstances and better life without an improved self. They want victory without paying the price or making efforts. It really cannot happen without the other. Any improvements that have not been generated by improving yourself are superficial and short-lived. If you want to have a better future, you have to change yourself. Stop worrying about the various challenges that will come your way. Just believe in yourself and use them as stepping-stones.
(4) “Success” is getting whatever you want out of life without violating the rights of others.” It is not an accident. Success is the result of our attitude and our attitude is a choice. Hence success is a matter of choice and not chance.
(5) Today success represents a holistic and positive attitude to life. Attitude is everything. Success is not restricted within some kind of brick and mortar premises. It assumes the individuality of a complete act executed with perfection; material achievements do not define life. We don’t remember sports stars for the products they endorse but the spirit of achievement that they represent. In the abundance of positive attitude, lie the grandeur of a truly rewarding rich life.
(6) Success can be measured from two standpoints-the external and the internal. Externally it is the measure of a job well done and the recognition. Internally it is the feeling of achievement and wholeness derived from the completion of a task or fulfilment of desire.

2. Read the following passage carefully:
(1) Even as the number of recorded COVID deaths crossed a million on Monday, medical professionals called for balance in the treatment of COVID and non-COVID cases pointing to the fact that every year cardiovascular diseases kill more than 17 million, cancers over 9.5 million and chronic respiratory diseases almost four million. According to the medical journal Lancet’s report Global Burden of Diseases, there are at least 15 different diseases that kill more than a million people every year.
(2) While the swine flue pandemic in 2009 is estimated to have killed about half a million in one year, the 1918 Spanish flu is estimated to have killed about 50 million.
(3) However, COVID-19 stretched the capacity of health systems as no other pandemic in recent history, as an extraordinary number of patients required hospitalised care and came in at unexpected pace. A good section of these needed prolonged critical care. With the virus being highly infectious, large numbers are affected in a short time. Just 5-6% of total case becoming critically ill has meant a huge burden on the health system.
(4) As health systems geared up for COVID, most other health services were suspended. Referring to a survey across several countries, that showed regular health services were hit in most countries due to COVID, WHO Director General said that many who needed treatment for diseases like cancer, heart ailments and diabetes were not getting the required attention.
(5) A professor at AIMS, Delhi said, “We have about three to four patients of stroke or heart attack who are brought dead to the hospital every day. The only difference is that COVID deaths are being counted and these are not.”
(6) A modelling study published in the Lancet Global Health suggested that, worldwide, one in five people were at an increased risk of severe COVID-19 should they become infected, mostly as a result of underlying non-communicable diseases
(7) Unfortunately, hospital systems are designed for average patient loads, not epidemics, stated a paper on hospital capacity and operations during COVID-19, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It added that most hospitals prided themselves on minimising empty beds, but this could result in their being ill-equipped for an increase in cases. The pandemic brought into focus the slackness in a system- under-utilized capacities and capabilities both physical and human, which could be put to use in a crisis
(8) With health systems operating at more than maximum capacity, a Lancet editorial warned that “healthcare workers, unlike ventilators or wards cannot be urgently manufactured or run at 100% occupancy for long periods.”

Write a letter in about 120 words to Shamak Dawar (Salsa Guru), Director, S.D. Group, Model Town Delhi, enquiring about the dance classes, timings, fees, duration, conditions for admission, etc. (5)
(ii) Read the following excerpt from an article that appeared in the magazine section of a local daily:
The ban on single-use plastic is impractical. The purpose of articles like bags and packaging is ultimately to make human life easier. Plastic articles do this well, so they shouldn’t be banned.
Write a paragraph in about 120 words to analyze the given argument. You could think about what alternative explanations might weaken the given conclusion and include rationale/ evidence that would strengthen/ counter the given argument. (5)

(ii) Ban On Plastic
Single use plastic causes more harm to the environment than benefitting it. Its toxic contents are harmful for all whether they are human beings, animals or marine creatures. In fact they cause a decline in the healthy state of those also who produce it as it leads to many illnesses. The government has decided to put a blanket ban on single-use plastic articles which is a wise step. It is going to be helpful for our environment which is in a declining state everyone must join in this campaign to save our planet and to make it pollution free., More of environment friendly products should be used. The ban on these products is not impractical. There is no denying the fact that these products make our life easier but we should come up for the welfare of all and not be selfish. The ban will be useful in the long run.

6. (i) Valli’s favourite pastime was to watch the bus that travelled between her village and the nearest town. (2 x 6 = 12)
(ii) The village baker was very important for festive occasions. Marriage gifts were meaningless without the sweet bread known as ‘bol’. Sandwiches, cakes and bolinhas were a must for Christmas as well as other festivals. These were made with the bread.
(iii) He was beaten because he went to serve summons to the victims in dark and shadowy corners of the city to appear as witness in court which they disliked.
(iv) ‘The Tale of Custard the Dragon’ is a humorous, light hearted poem as the characters display behavioural attributes, contrary to their appearance as well as nature. It is extremely funny to imagine a fierce looking dragon crying for a safe cage or mouse raging like a lion.
(v) No, he wouldn’t have agreed to it. In the story, Ramlal is shown to be a concerned and loving father who had immense love for his youngest daughter. Even though he confronted his wife and warned her to marrying off Bholi to Bishamber but it was his wife who insisted on her getting married to this old man.
(vi) The speaker i.e. Amanda’s mother is very caring and concerned towards Amanda. So much so that she has rather become over protective. Amanda’s careless attitude has made her worry for her future. She wants to teach Amanda all the rules of proper social conduct lest people should blame her for nagging Amanda.
(vii) Kisa Gotami’s only son had died. She went to Buddha to seek some medicine to revive her son. The Buddha asked her to bring some mustard seeds, from the house where there had been no death ever, but Gotami could not find any such house. Thus she realised that death is inevitable for every mortal being. Cycle of life and death is a normal process.
7. (i) Natalya: Oh my God! Did I hear you right when you called my mother ‘hump backed’?
Lomov: Yes, Of course! She was hump-baked (4 x 2 = 8)
Natalya: And what do you have to say about your family? It’s so mean of you talking like that. Your head is swirling, you’re seeing stars in front of your eyes and even then you’re talking ill of my family!

SCIENCE IS LIFE
It’s true that above line is telling us about the significance of Science in our lives. It indeed is our life, the be all and end all of our existence on this very special planet mother earth. Many scientific discoveries and inventions have changed the course of our life, from a food gatherer man became a food producer; it’s all thanks to the greatness of Science. It has revolutionised the entire world around. No man is left free without his dependence on scientific inventions and discoveries. So, we can say truly ‘Science is life’.
(iii) Kisa Gotami was devastated by the death of her only son and wandered door to door, seeking help. Someone directed her to Sakyamuni, the Buddha, who asked her to bring a handful of mustard seeds. This raised a hope in Gotami’s heart that her son could be revived. But the condition imposed by Sakyamuni was that the seeds should be from a house where people had not lost a loved one to death. Kisa Gotami’s futile search made her realize the bitter truth that sorrows are a part and parcel of life and one can attain peace only by acceptance.
Buddha says that everything in this world is subject to death. He further says that the world is deeply affected by suffering, disease or pain. Inevitably there is death and decay, therefore the wise do not grieve, knowing the terms of the world. Neither from weeping nor from grieving can anyone obtain peace of mind.
