( i ) The above line was spoken by Gerrard .
( ii ) He said this line as the intruder didn’t threaten him anymore and didn’t even order him and asked him to tell something about himself .
( iii ) Gerrard was being sarcastic . The intruder wasn’t sympathetic at all . Rather , he asked Gerrard to talk about himself and he did so at gunpoint . He did so that he could use the information to fulfil his own selfish interests .
2. Why does the intruder choose Gerrard as the man whose identity he wants to take on ?
ANSWER :
The intruder chose Gerrard as the man whose identity he wanted to take on because physically has a similar body structure and therefore , his clothes too would fit him comfortably . Also , while posing as Vincent Charles Gerrard , he would roam around in different places while doing nothing . He would not have to flee on seeing a policeman and he would be able to eat and sleep without that fear in mind . All that was he needed was a pair of spectacles to look like Gerrard .

( i ) Gerrard is the speaker of the above line .
( ii ) It means that when he had to face adverse circumstances , he had murdered someone and fled . That’s why he said , ” I said it with bullets ” , which meant that he had used bullets as the means .
( iii ) that wasn’t true . Gerrard said this because he wanted to send across a message to the intruder that he was dangerous as well . He knew that the intruder would have killed him had he not lied about himself . Therefore , he portrayed himself as a cheat and a killer .
4. What is Gerrard’s profession ? Quote the parts of the play that support your answer .

Gerrard probably was a playwright by profession . The following lines from the text support this assumption :

The intruder intended to kill Gerrard and adopt his identity to escape the eyes of the police . Hence , he felt that when Gerrard realizes this , he would stop trying to act smart in front of him .

( ii ) In the first instance , the surprise was the plan of murdering Gerrard and then adoption of his identity by the intruder . In the second case , the surprise was Gerrard’s fake tale of committing the crime by which he thought of saving himself .
